Wine in Prescott, the Best Wine Merchants in Town

I know a little bit about wine. I know a lot more about what kind I like.

Wine & Grapes Unfortunately, I don't know very much about which wines, of the thousands available in Prescott, I might like.

So, like you, I have a choice. I can do my wine shopping at the grocery store or the local warehouse store or even on the net, or I can buy from a Wine Merchant that buys and sells wine for a living.

I choose to buy almost all of my wines from a Wine Merchant, and you should too.

You don't have a Personal Wine Merchant? Well, you should. I suppose that, technically, I don't have a personal merchant either, but I do have one that I trust, who knows what I like and who understands my budget constraints. He is also adept at pairing wines I like with food, which is a nice plus when you are preparing a new dish for guests or having a party.

But the convenience of shopping at the grocery, you say, and the added cost! Not so. Look at it this way, you are going to spend a certain amount on wine each month no matter where you buy it - right?

So why not buy your wine from someone who has actually tasted the wine?

This way you avoid those wines with the cute label that taste like turpentine, and you didn't waste money on a bottle you can't even cook with! Obviously, it is less expensive to buy 1 bottle of wine that you like, rather than 2 bottles and you only like 1.

Oh, you only buy certain wines that you know you like? I can only ask why? There are thousands of wines out there and a lot of them are very good. Some are even great! Limiting yourself to just a few "safe" bottles is unfair to YOU!

A few years, ok quite a few, years ago I would only drink one variety - German Riesling. I knew I liked it and, frankly, I was chicken to try anything else.

Until one day a persistent merchant in Phoenix convinced us to try Chianti & Pasta an Italian Chianti Classico Reserva with the Italian food my wife was planning that evening. It was a revelation.

The food, already good, tasted even better and the Chianti was even more delicious with the food. I was hooked.

From then on I decided to try different wines. Wines made from grapes I had never heard of, from countries I couldn't place on a map. Wines that a lot of my friends turned their nose up at - until they tried them.

I know it is a hard habit to break, I'll even admit to straying at the grocery every now and again, but believe me, finding a Wine Merchant that you trust and can communicate with, will be the best thing you have ever done for your taste buds.

How do you find a good wine merchant in Prescott? Try them out. Go to their tastings. Talk to them, tell them that you like Yellow Tail Chardonnay and why. Tell them what you like and what you don't.

Don't get discouraged because the first bottle of wine you brought home from a merchant wasn't your cup of tea - tell him or her what you like or didn't like about it! After all they need to learn about you too.

Be adventurous, get out there and try something new tonight (I'm still talking about wine here). Take an extra 20 minutes and stop in to any of the Wine Merchants in Prescott. Find one you can talk to and that will listen to you.

Wine Merchants You Should Try

Veritas Wines - proprietor Clyde Woode, whose other venture The Bistro, we tried for lunch, is a smallish wine store with a big variety of wines you have never heard of, as well as some popular favorites. Clyde is a personable guy with a lot of wine knowledge who would be happy to help you along on your wine journey.Veritas also offers regularly scheduled tastings, seminars and the occasional outing that are all fun and decidedly un-stuffy.

The Library of Wine is another of those dual purpose establishments (click here for the Library Nibbles review) Melanie and Klaas, the owners, have a lot going on in this store front on Gurley. Wine tastings, lunch, entertainment, tea, appetizers, Haggis - really Haggis! Melanie is a delight and knows her wines. She or Klaas would be happy to help with finding the varieties and style that fit your taste and pocket book.

Jazzys Wine Bar & Fine Spirits is a welcome addition to Prescott's wine and spirits scene. With 200+ wines in stock, 20 or so wines always available for tasting, a climate controlled Reserve Wine room and a pleasant atmosphere Jazzys has a lot going for it.

If you are serious about wine you should check it out.
