Willow Creek Inn
a Prescott, Arizona Local Hangout
A private Victorian residence built in 1877, The Willow Creek Inn is now a local “hangout”. Now I mean that in the nicest way. Locals tend to patronize establishments that are: - Are comfortable.
- Are not too fussy – you know comfortable. Oops. I digress, sorry!
- Have good food and a wide variety of items on the menu.
- Are relatively close to home or work.
- Are not too spendy.
The Willow Creek Inn meets all of the necessary criteria. The gracious old Victorian still has that feel of home that makes us all feel comfortable. The decor is, here's a shocker, Victorian, with dark Oak wainscotting, crown molding and fret work on the well stocked bar it really can take you back to the 19th century. Still, this style can be too fussy, but The Willow Creek Inn manages to avoid this potential pitfall with large windows in the main dining room that are flanked by high top tables, a friendly, decidedly un-stuffy, staff and an owner that is about as "local" as they come. The menu has variety to say the least.
There are the standard appetizers and a nice array of salads that range from $4.25 to about $11.50. There is a whole page of sandwiches, from "Bigger than Big" hot dogs to a Monte Carlo (you don't see that much anymore)that run from $5.75 to $10.50. Since I am here for lunch I am going to forego laying out the rest of the menu - we'll do dinner some night - suffice it to say I haven't even mentioned the BBq, Italian or German food! The current special is posted outside the entry door, so have a look before you go in.
I was greeted and seated by Doyle, he has been at the Inn for 7 years knows all of the locals and knows his business as well. I ordered the lunch special. A Pulled pork sandwich with a side of fries and 2 slices of dill pickle. I do a bit of smoked meat myself and I can say with a great deal of confidence that the smoke master has done this once before. The pulled pork was moist with good, not overwhelming, smoke flavor. The sauce was served on the side and was pretty standard fare, not too distinctive but a sauce that most people would enjoy. The bun was moist but not soggy, it worked well with the pork The fries were thick cut, tender on the inside and crispy on the outside - ookie-dokey on the fries. The dill pickle - they were really good- I need to ask them what brand they are next time I stop in. The Willow Creek Inn may be local, but an out of town guest could without doubt find something here that would fill the bill for a casual, leisurely, not too fussy lunch.
