Speed's Deli Can Run but it Can’t Hide!
Speed’s Deli, or if you want to get formal Speed’s Hanger Deli, has been around. By that I mean that I have spent a significant amount of time following Debbie, the owner, chief cook and bottle washer of Speed’s, from Prescott to Prescott Valley and now back to Prescott. It has been worth the trouble This Prescott breakfast sandwich and lunch spot has several claims to fame. Located in an industrial park in North Prescott it’s, frankly, not much to look at – on the outside. Inside is a whole different deal. It’s not fancy – far from it, really really far from it, this place is like nothing I have ever seen in an eating establishment anywhere in the country. The ceilings are hung with camouflage netting, the walls are plastered with pictures of aircraft dating back to WWII, there are dozens of letters from servicemen and women on the walls and table tops, mostly thanking Debbie for her letters of support. There are vintage advertisements and accounts of daring rescues in Afghanistan. In short, the military theme of Speed’s Deli is not the tacky, designed by a NY design firm to drag customer’s in, junk that we have all seen. No, this is the real deal. Read a few of those letters over breakfast or lunch and see if you don’t agree. The food at Speed’s is dished out with the same love and respect that Debbie has sent to our service people overseas. There are some 50 sandwiches on the deli menu, all named after various aircraft that served in the Army Air Force, the RAF, the Red Army, the Japanese Air Force, the Luftwaffe and probably several more that I didn’t recognize. Anyway, the names not with standing, these are some of the best deli style sandwiches you can get in the Prescott area. Roast beef, Capicolla, Pastrami, Turkey, Ham, Proccuitto, meatloaf, meat balls if it goes on a sandwich Debbie probably has it. Ditto for cheeses, sauces, and other condiments. There are 8 kinds of bread/rolls to pile all of this stuff on and pile it on they do. I ordered a Beaufighter on Sourdough. Check this out now – 8 strips of bacon, lettuce, tomato and mayo. In other words a BLT, or more accurately, a BBBBBLT. Man! What great sandwich. At various other visits to Speed’s Deli I’ve ordered the “Zero Meatball” – 3- .2 lb meatballs, homemade spaghetti sauce and melted Mozzarella; the “Macci” – Capicolla, Salami, Onions, Jalapeños and Provolone; and well – you get the idea. These are great sandwiches. Coleslaw, potato salad, rice pudding, homemade soups - yep it’s all here and it’s all good eats,. Speed’s does party subs (1lb of meat and 1/4lb cheese per ft!), staff and corporate meetings too – I can only imagine. This is a great place for a sandwich, but don’t expect it to be elegant.
