Prescott Pantry
Everything Fresh, Everything Homemade
The Prescott Pantry is hardly a pretentious restaurant. Located right
on busy Iron Springs Rd.
in a non-descript slump-block building with a Mansard roof, it is easy
to miss.
Inside The Prescott Pantry is ... eclectic. There are gifts (ceramics, pottery,
greeting cards) for sale here and there in the restaurant.
There is also a bakery, a deli and a small window where you
order your food - that's the restaurant part.
The tables are mostly on the east end but spill over
to wherever space is available.
Overall the feel of the place is low key, relaxed and maybe a bit
old-fashioned.
If the
restaurant decor is old fashioned the food is decidedly not.
The Prescott Pantry has been serving food made
from scratch with fresh ingredients for as long as I can remember
(which is a long time - despite what my wife says!).
The lunch menu is focused on
sandwiches (hot or cold), chili and soups, salads, quiche and "The
Pantry's Famous Melts".
Sandwiches come in two sizes - whole ($5.45 - $5.95) and half ($2.75 -
$3.25) - on your choice of 4 breads or a croissant. Fillings include
the regulars like smoked ham, pastrami and Tuna salad - and
some surprises like Braunschweiger and almond chicken salad.
Salads at the Pantry are interesting - Sesame Turkey or Apple Feta
Pecan ($6.45, 1/2 $3.95), Skinny Greek or
Pavo Delgado (both diet $6.45, 1/2 $4.25) or try a sampler of 2 mix and
match scoops($6.25) of deli salad (seafood pasta, Rotini, egg salad
etc.). All come with homemade bread and butter.
Of course, there are all of the standards too - Chef salad, Green leaf,
etc.
My wife ordered a 1/2 Turkey melt. I ordered a pastrami on rye and a
side of potato salad. We carried our Yogi Berra sign back to
our table and sat down to await our meal.
We
didn't have to wait for long.
The turkey melt - served on sourdough with green onions, tomatoes and
pesto- mayo was very good. The cheese was melted,
but the tomatoes and onions still had a little crunch to them - very
nicely done.
My pastrami was fine. The pastrami was good, the rye bread had a nice
rye tang. My only complaint was the portion size.
I am a pretty big guy and I admit that I have a hearty appetite. I
wasn't expecting a behemoth of a sandwich - but I really
don't like going away hungry - so I suggest you have dessert!
The potato salad was very good - though different from your standard
fare. Light on the mayo, red potatoes and parsley made for a nice dish.
As we finished up our spiced ice tea ($1.75) I thought that this would
be an ideal place for a ladies lunch, you and a friend or just about
anyone with a lighter appetite.
There is a kids menu, an excellent dessert menu including pie
by the slice ($3.95) and a whole host of available beverages including
Perrier and Republic of Teas tea.
Try the Prescott Pantry - the locals have been for years. Including my
better half who says it's one of her favorite restaurants.
