Iron Springs Cafe
Food that is Just a Little Different in Prescott, Arizona
A short drive out Iron Springs road brings us to the Iron Springs Cafe. Housed in the old Santa Fe railroad Hillside Depot building in looks more like an antique shop than anything else.
We parked in the gravel lot behind the establishment (subsequent to this review the gravel lot has been paved) and walked around to the front door.
If you have been to this Café before you take the decor in stride. It’s rustic. There is no mood lighting or fine art on the walls, the tables are a jumble of different styles and what passes for a bar is stuck into about a 4’ square space.
If this is your first trip, you may react like the people in front of us “Oh man – I hope this place is better than it looks!” Let me assure you, it is. We chose to sit in the “dining car” area (which is our designation not the restaurants) that has several booths that are built out of 2 train car benches around a rudimentary table. I wouldn’t recommend sitting in the booths if you have any kind of a mobility problem – they are a pretty tight fit, but we like it and there are plenty of tables that are more easily accessible.
I would highly recommend sitting in the outdoor patio area if the weather is nice. It is completely fenced in, so you feel secluded, there are heaters if it is a bit chilly and there is shade if it is warm in the sun.
Having perused the specials of the day that are posted on a black board above the “bar” we decided we should look at the menu anyway – it’s good form I guess and the choices are interesting and fun. There are burgers, andouille sausage dishes, fish dishes, chicken dishes and lots more, all with a twist. It’s kind of a Southwestern / Cajun fusion. Funky – huh? Anyway, I chose the Carnitas with black beans and rice with pico de gallo and flour tortillas. My wife chose the salmon quesadilla.
Derek, our waiter, who is among the very best waiters in Prescott, took our order in his usual prompt, friendly and efficient way and our beverages were served promptly and kept full. In short, the staff at the Iron Springs Cafe is on the ball. The Carnitas was very good. The black beans and rice were good as well. Don’t make the mistake of thinking that the black beans are a form of refried beans – they are not. They are done al dente, with just the slightest crunch, I guess beans can be al dente – good stuff! Stack some Carnitas, black beans and rice on the warm flour tortillas, add some pico de gallo and you’ve got some Prescott good eats. The salmon quesadilla made with cotija cheese was very good as well, or so my wife says. I got one bite and although I am not a big salmon fan I must admit that it was very good. So 2 for 2! If you are looking for a little different slant on lunch the Iron Springs Cafe fills the bill.
Good food, attentive professional service, very reasonable prices, you really can’t ask for more. But, beware! The food here is a little different, and we applaud them for it, and the decor? Well, we can live with it.
