Brown Bag
Burger
I
made my second trip to Brown Bag Burger today. I am thinking
of making my third trip tomorrow.
Located in the depot market place at the corner
of Sheldon and
Montezuma this burger joint is not in Prescott's tourist bullseye - so
why are there lines out the door?
Well, it could be the ok but nothing special 50's decor - neon and all
- that attracts such a following - but I don't think so. It may be the
friendly service - which never hurts - but I don't think that is it
either.
I suppose it could be the prices - but to be honest - you can get a
burger for less than what you will pay at Brown Bag Burger - so that's
not it.
The reason people have flocked to this unassuming, out of the way
little place is the burgers.
The small 7oz hamburger made from fresh beef and served on a
traditional bun with your choice of condiments and crispy fries will
set you back $6.45 - let me quote myself just this once - "a small
7oz ". National burger chains spend millions advertising their
huge
1/4 pounders (4oz) or you can mega size that up to an enormous 1/3
pound
(5+oz).
To cut to the chase, Brown Bag Burgers are BIG, REALLY BIG (10oz),
REALLY REALLY BIG (14oz) and RIDICULOUS (20oz). If BIG was
all they had going for them people would more than likely frequent this
place anyway , but that's just part of the formula that makes Brown Bag
Burger work.
Standard toppings are included with your burger - lettuce, tomato,
onions, pickles, ketchup, mustard and mayo. Add swiss, American,
cheddar or pepper jack cheese for $.50.
Specialty burgers, burgers with a fancy topping, include the green
chili burger, which is excellent,($7.25), the Jalapeno burger ($7.05),
the Bacon Cheese Burger, also excellent, ($8.60) and the chili size
($8.60).
A large helping of fries comes with the burger too. Crispy on the
outside, tender on the inside - the fries are good. If you are feeling
adventurous upgrade to Sweet potato fries for a $1.60. My wife says they are
good -
so you can bet they are. Her only complaint- she would
like
to see a little more variety in the dipping sauces - which is
understandable since the dipping sauces are limited to ketchup and
yellow mustard.
If
you or your companion just aren't in the mood for a burger, BBB offers
various chicken and shrimp combos that range from $7.75 for a 7 piece
chicken nuggets to $51.30 for a 3 pound Family Shrimp basket.
Polish dogs, chili dogs, onion rings and chili fill out the rest of the
menu.
The regular fountain beverages are available - $1.80 regular and $2.10
for an X-tra large.
AND THEN
there are the milkshakes($5.35) and malts ($5.55) - 28oz of
deliciousness - plenty for two and there are only 3 flavors to pick
from so there won't be much indecision to deal with - want to
guess? Come on - you know this! Right - Chocolate, Strawberry, and
Vanilla.
There is a kids menu for kids under 12 - 4 oz frozen patties on the
burgers.
So why do people flock to the Brown Bag Burger? After all they don't do
Adobo sauce with leeks and cream cheese burgers - they only do pretty
standard burgers - but they do them very well.
More burger joints should try their formula.
