Berry's Pie
Pantry
Welcome back!
Berry's
has been a institution in Prescott for - oh, maybe 20 years. It started
out in an old Victorian on Grove, moved to an "A" frame on Gurley,
moved to Prescott Valley and then disappeared for a year or so.
Well now the Berrys' are back!- and Prescott couldn't be happier.
Since
they have always been partial to buildings that are, let's say
"different" - it will not surprise you to find that the latest
incarnation of the Pie Pantry is in a building at 230 N. Virginia St. that
looks like it came right off a western movie set.
The restaurant
is pretty straight forward - there are a couple of booths
that
will sit up to 6, 3 or so tables that will seat 2 and 4 - 4 top tables.
The decor is hardly over-done. There are a few, pictures, posters and
the like on the walls, all with a twist on the Berry theme - you know -
blueberry's, black berries, cherries -
I would peg
this place as cute and comfortable.
Berry's Pie Pantry is more than what it's name implies - there is a full breakfast menu and a full lunch menu,
both are well stocked with local favorites and a few items that Berry's
Pie Pantry calls its' very own- T.A.B.S. on a croissant (turkey,
avocado, bacon and Alfalfa sprouts) and "Flannel" cakes made from an
old family recipe (I have no idea what Flannel Cakes are?!).
Anyway,
having been ejected from the house in favor of my wifes women's club
meeting, I decided to give this newcomer (sort of) to the
Prescott restaurant scene a try.
I pulled in to the lot
situated behind the restaurant at around 11:50 in the morning. There
was already 1 person standing outside the door who informed me that I
need to get on the list, which I did. After a short wait, I was seated
by a harried but friendly young lady that was on hostess duty that day.
As usual I asked her what was the most popular item on the menu
and, as usual, I got the "everything is good" reply - Ok, then what do
you like best I asked "T.A.B.S." she said.
When
my server arrived, the picture of a small town restaurant server,
mature, experienced and I wouldn't even think of giving her any grief!
Anyway, I asked her the same question re: what did she like and she
replied - T.A.B.S.
So T.A.B.S.($7.69) it was.- with a cup of chicken noodle soup included.
By
now the place was packed and there were 15 people standing outside the
door and a steady stream of people putting their names on the waiting
list.
I started with the soup. This was not your canned variety.
The soup was fresh the wide noodles firm and the chunks of chicken
tender. Good soup.
I waited
maybe 10 minutes or so, not too long considering the crowd, for my
sandwich - it was well worth the wait!
The
croissant was buttery and flaky and the turkey was piled high. There
were several slices of ripe avocado, the bacon was crisp and the spouts
fresh. This was a very good sandwich that I would recommend without
reservation. Ladies - if you have a smaller appetite I would suggest
splitting the T.A.B.S. with a friend - you will both be happier and you
will have saved room for:
PIE! Berry's Pie Pantry makes all of
their pies on the premises and I can tell you from many years of
experience that all of their pies are good.
Whether on a
banana cream, chocolate or coconut the Meringue is light and beautiful
and the custards are excellent.
The fruit pies (my wifes favorite) are
bursting with fruit flavors and the crusts are light and flaky.
Here's
the plan - get into Berry's early, have lunch or breakfast (served to
11:00am) but, save room - that piece of pie has your name on it!
If you didn't save room (I didn't) all is not lost - most of the pies on the menu
are available for sale - as a whole pie (I did) - those that aren't can
be special ordered and picked up at the drive up window. They run
$8.99-$9.99.
Take your lady friends, take your friends, take anyone who likes good
food and great pies prepared well.
