The Apple Pan -
Redux
Sue Ann's Apple pan on West Gurley,
is another of those Prescott institutions that commands a large
& loyal following of hungry locals.
That alone should tell us something! So off we go to try it - for
breakfast this time - we did lunch a while back.
Depending on where you park or, more to the point, where you can find a
parking spot, you may be in for a 3 block uphill walk from
the square.
It's not a killer though and, in fact makes for a nice warm up for
breakfast.
We found a spot on Gurley that only required a mildly scary U-turn.
A short walk brought us to our destination.
The Apple Pan, from the outside, looks like most any small town diner.
In other words it's not much to look at. Now don't get me wrong - there
is nothing wrong with the way it looks - but it's not fancy and there
is not much more than the sign to draw you in... except maybe the good
advice of a local!
Please take my advice and make the effort to go in - it is worth it!
Once inside you will see why the place is called the Apple Pan. The
color scheme is red, white and green and , the poster art is
about apples,
the old signs are about apples and everything else in the place is
appley too. It is cute, clean and appealing.
We were greeted by Meryll - our server - who directed us to our table -
one of about 15 or so 4 tops ( if you are feeling particulary friendly
today you can also sit at the counter). We ordered a cup of coffee- one
regular one decaf- and sat back to peruse the menu.
The menu has everything on it you would expect from a neighborhood
restaurant.
The Apple Pan offers a dozen different 3 egg omelets , French
toast, pancakes, chicken fried steak, House specialty crepes, hash
(nope it's not homemade) and most anything else you might like for
breakfast. Check out the $4.95 breakfast specials - just
another good reason to give this locals favorite a try.
Meryll
took our order for Barbrambled eggs (Scrambled w/ sauteed corn
tortilla chips, green onion & tomatoes and topped w/ cheddar
cheese $7.95), an apple pancake ($2.50 or so), and an order for a
"Slightly Light Breakfast" (1/2 order bacon, ham or sausage, 2 eggs,
1/2 order potatoes & 1 piece of toast $6.25).
Our order was ready in just a few minutes and Meryll served it to us in
a most professional and unobtrusive manner, along with refills on both
coffees - which were good by the way.
My wifes Barbramble was very good. The tortilla chips,
tomatoes and
onion made for an interesting as well as tasty dish. The hash browns
which came with the Barbramble were fine - crispy as ordered - but
nothing really special.
The Apple pancake was very good as well. The cake was light
and fluffy, but with enough substance to be satisfying, the baked
apples on top were delicious - sweet and still slightly crisp.
The Slighty Light Breakfast was excellent - I would really like to see
a full breakfast!- Mark's Potatoes ( Mark is one of the owners /cooks)
were well seasoned, not mushy and just plain tasted good! The
Bacon (2 strips) was thick cut and crispy and the eggs done just right.
As we finished our meal Sue Ann (the other owner) stopped by the table
to check on our well being - we thank her for that! - and we told her -
just as we will tell you - we are just fine and we will make
it a point to come back.
The
Apple Pan for Lunch
For lunch, offerings include hot sandwiches like the Mile High Melt
(Ham, swiss, green chilies and sautéed onions on sourdough). Cold
sandwiches (Chicken salad, Ham & swiss, etc), 1/3 pound Burgers
with mushrooms, chili, Ortega chilies etc. Check out the
$5.95 lunch specials too.
There are also 3 or 4 salads, chili, and soup. The Apple
Pan menu covers all of the expected bases.
We ordered a Mile High Melt and a Patty Melt, potato salad, fries, and
iced tea. Our waitress took our order, delivered our iced tea and in
short order returned with our meals.
The iced tea was fresh, a great start since I drink so much of it, and
again our waitress was on the ball with re-fills as soon as my glass
was empty.
The Mile High Melt was excellent. The ham was good the swiss nicely
melted the chilies and sautéed onions, perfect. Pile all of that on
some good sourdough and we have a winner! Excellent sandwich
The Patty Melt followed the same plan – good ingredients well prepared
on good bread = a very good sandwich.
The sides of potato salad and fries (if I didn’t mention it before you
get a choice of sides with any of the sandwiches) were very good. The
potato salad is home made, and tastes it. The fries were crispy and not
over done. I was surprised to find that they were frozen, they were
good though and that’s what really counts.
