The Aloha
Grille
aka: The
Paradise Cafe
aka: A Good
Place to Eat
The Aloha Grille is located in a strip mall just east of Grove on
Sheldon. It's not much to look at from the outside, but as the old and
worn saying goes - it's what's inside that counts.
This is a cute, clean and comfortable "Hawaiian Bistro" that is the
very
definition of a neighborhood restaurant.
In Prescott,
Arizona places
like this are few and far between so when you find one - take advantage.
There is plenty of parking but there are only about a half
dozen tables - so get here early or call ahead and, if they aren't too
busy, maybe they will hold a table for you.
As I walked in I was greeted, enthusiastically, by a group of
attractive young women that were lunching at the largest table in the
establishment - a 6 top. They informed me that this was one of their
favorite spots for lunch - things were looking up!
Randi Lee, who goes by Randi, was my server and she is a very good one.
Quick, friendly and competent, she handles the whole place by
herself without a glitch.
The Aloha Grille menu consists of a couple of "plates" (Kalua Pork and
Grilled
Teriyaki Chicken), a Yakasoba Stir fry that sounds terrific, a rice bowl
special, half a dozen salads, a dozen or so Sandwiches, Quesadillas and
Wraps and (Now get this!) a Pacific Rim Aloha Ahi Plate - sushi grade
Ahi seared and served with wasabi and ginger!
I didn't have a salad today but I promise you I will be back to try the
"Waimanaio Curry Salad - breast of chicken, organic greens, carrots,
celery, Scallions & Sliced Gala apples. Drizzled with Leilani
Curry Dressing and topped with Craisins and chopped Macadamia nuts.
Grilled Pineapple on the side"!.($9.95 - 1/2 $7.45) Sorry, I digress.
At Randi's
suggestion I ordered the 1/3 pound Teriyaki burger (it comes in a
2/3 pound as well) with Curried Macaroni salad and a blueberry iced tea.
The iced tea came first and I was pleasantly surprised that there was a
pronounced Blueberry flavor to the Blueberry tea. It was a little
strong for my taste, but Randi cut it 50/50 for me and it was perfect -
very good.
My burger came on a whole wheat roll, very tasty, a grilled pineapple
ring, lettuce, tomato and Sweet pepper sauce on the side. Everything
was fresh and delicious - except the burger.
I simply do not understand why a restaurant owner that has done so many
things right, who has used fresh ingredients throughout, would use a
pre-packaged frozen burger patty.
Anyway, that said, the burger was ok, the bun was good, the fixins were
good and the teriyaki sauce was excellent. All in all it was a good
burger that could have been great.
The Curried Macaroni was very good. Not like anything I have had before
but the curry worked pretty well with the macaroni salad - you learn
something new everyday!.
Dessert was
the Aloha Grille special of the day - free. You can't get more special
than that.
I opted for the pineapple upside down cake. In
a word - great! Warm, full of flavor - I haven't had one that good
since I can't remember when.
I asked my lady friends what they had had - The rice bowl special (very
good), tuna sandwich (excellent), half crab melt (ummmm - she was still
eating), Kalua pulled pork (very good) and a salad - deemed
excellent.
I can tell you that the ladies at that table know good cookin' when
they taste it - high praise indeed!
The Aloha Grille serves dinner on Friday evening - the menu changes
every couple of weeks but includes such goodies as Mango Baby Back Ribs, so call for the current offerings.
Dinner is by reservation.
The grille also caters, offers a 10% discount to students, does take
out orders and who knows
what else. This is a classic example of an entrepreneur fulfilling the
needs of her customers.
I wouldn't be surprised to see hula dancers or one of those guys that
has a wreath on his head and is blowing a conch shell horn - now that
would bring in the ladies who lunch!
