129-1/2
An Outstanding Happy Hour in Prescott, Arizona
You and I have been to
dinner at 129-1/2
check that review for all the details on the décor, parking etc This time around we are sitting at a cozy high top for 4 in the lounge area.
Mike, our server/bartender, greeted us with a friendly word and passed out the Happy Hour menus, and an interesting menu it is. Domestic bottled beer is $2.00, Imports and Microbrews are $3.00, Margaritas are $3.00 and house wines are $4.00. We ordered up a couple of beers and a couple of Margaritas and started in on the Happy Hour nibbles menu. Let me say right up front that if you walk away from this Happy Hour hungry – you must be sick. There are peel and eat shrimp - $5.00 for ½#, fried oysters, wings, smoked salmon deviled eggs - $1.00 ea, a quarter rack of baby back ribs for $5.00 and a whole slew of other stuff that sounds good. We did our best to leave no stone unturned.
We ordered 2 prime rib sandwiches - $5.00 ea, pecan chicken fingers - $4.00, a ¼ rack of ribs, Idaho Nachos, calamari and another round from the bar. I must admit that I am skeptical when I see prime rib anything on a happy hour menu. What a surprise! Our sandwiches came on a full size bun with generous portion of prime rib, horse radish sauce and bleu cheese. Tender, flavorful and an excellent value. The pecan chicken fingers were OK, kind of bland – I wouldn’t order them again. If the prime rib sandwiches were a home run then the ribs were a stand up triple. They were moist and tender and the sauce, while sweet, was not too sweet. Very good. We have had the calamari at 129-1/2 before and it is very good. Lightly battered and fried in butter and garlic, it’s got enough garlic to be good, but not enough to melt your date. The Idaho Nachos were something I had never seen before.
These nachos were made with homemade potato chips that were light and crispy, Scallions and bacon. It was then lightly sprinkled with bleu cheese crumbles. Really good – a definite winner. Our Margaritas were very good – pretty standard fare but well made. The beer was domestic – so nothing special to report there. I should mention that we were at 129-1/2 at 5:30 on a Tuesday afternoon. It was fairly quiet, there were only a few other couples there when we arrived. By the time we left around 7:30 the place was filling up and the lounge was getting some pretty good use. This is a great place for an after work drink, a light (if you don’t order like we did) cheap dinner or just a place to gather with friends. Location: 129-1/2 N.Cortez St. just a block North of the Town Square. Parking in front, all along Cortez.- Hours: Happy hour Tuesday through Sunday 4-6:00 pm in the in the lounge and the parlor.
